New Guidelines in Alberta
As of January 1, 2022, Alberta implemented the Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD), which means that drivers can claim from their own insurer instead of claiming for damage from the at-fault driver’s insurance. DCPD can only cover damage for which the driver is not at fault.
Under Alberta law, you should call the police to report a car accident in the following cases:
-
Anyone is injured
-
The damage is $5,000 or more
-
You are the victim of a hit-and-run
-
A driver is missing documentation like a driver's license, registration, or insurance
-
One or more of the vehicles is not drivable
